Your Ontario, CA fence company, from the property line to the last gate latch

Grove Ontario Fence Builders plans and installs wood, vinyl and wrought iron fences, RV and driveway gates, and repairs across Ontario and the west Inland Empire. Each job is laid out around the rules first: a permit above 3 feet, 6-foot side and rear limits, and posts set for Santa Ana winds in sandy ground.

Sheet 01

General notes for an Ontario fence

The rules that decide height, permits and post layout before anyone digs. Each one comes from the City of Ontario or state law.

  1. Permit above 3 ftOntario requires a building permit for wood, chain link and wrought iron fences, and block walls, over 3 feet tall.
  2. 3 ft front, 6 ft side and rearFront-yard fences top out at 3 feet; side, street-side and rear property-line fences at 6 feet, measured from the lowest adjacent grade.
  3. Pools: 5 ft enclosureOntario requires a pool, spa or pond deeper than 1.5 feet to be fully enclosed by a decorative nonclimbable fence or wall at least 5 feet tall.
  4. 110 mph, Exposure CThe city's structural criteria design houses for 110 mph winds in open Exposure C terrain, the same air a 6-foot privacy fence has to stand in.
  5. Two working daysCalifornia law requires a DigAlert ticket at least two working days before post holes are dug.
  6. 30 days' noticeUnder Civil Code 841, neighbors share a dividing fence's reasonable cost, after 30 days' written notice.

Sheet 02

What usually starts a fence project here

Four situations behind most calls in Ontario, and what each one changes about the job.

After a wind event

Panels down after a Santa Ana night

Wind loads a solid 6-foot fence like a sail. When posts snap at grade or footings rock loose in sandy soil, the repair is about the posts and footings, not only the boards.

New home

A new Ontario Ranch house that needs more than the builder's walls

Ontario's Development Code has new tracts delivered with block walls and a return wall with an access gate. A wider RV gate, a pool enclosure or a topper for height usually comes next, under the specific plan and HOA rules for that tract.

Shared line

The neighbor wants to replace the shared fence

California presumes both owners benefit and share reasonable cost. The first questions are where the line is, what style both can live with and how the notice works.

Access

An RV, boat or trailer needs a wider gate

A 12 to 16 foot opening changes the posts, footings and swing. Driveway slope decides whether a swing gate clears or a rolling gate makes more sense.

How Grove plans a fence

What you get before a post goes in.

Prices in writing, published first

Typical per-foot ranges for each material are on this page and in the cost tool, so a quote has something to be measured against.

The rules for your city, not a guess

Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga and Chino Hills have different permit and height rules. The plan follows the city the property sits in.

Posts sized for wind and soil

Post spacing, depth and footing are set for a fence's height, its material and the sandy soils most of Ontario sits on.

Licensed and insured contractors

Installation is carried out by licensed and insured fence contractors.

Sheet 05

From first call to final gate

How a project moves, shown as stages on the plan.

  1. First call

Address, fence length, height and material in a few minutes, plus photos if you have them.

  2. Site walk and layout

The line is walked and measured, gates and slopes marked, and survey questions raised where the property line is unclear.

  3. Permits, HOA and DigAlert

The permit and any HOA approval are lined up, and DigAlert marks utilities before digging.

  4. Posts, then panels

Posts are set and cured before rails, boards or panels go on, and gates are hung last so they close square.

  5. Walk-through

The finished line, gate swing and latches are checked with you, and debris is hauled away.

Have a line in mind?

Send the address, the length and the material you are considering. A plan and price can start from that.

Sheet 06

Cost schedule

Typical installed prices per linear foot for Southern California projects. Your price depends on the line itself.

Typical installed fence prices per linear foot
FencePer linear foot
Wood privacy, 6 ft (redwood or cedar)$30 to $70
Vinyl privacy, 6 ft$35 to $75 and up
Wrought iron, tubular steel or aluminum$35 to $100
Chain link, 4 to 6 ft$18 to $38
Old fence removal and haul-away$3 to $8
Per linear foot, installed. Typical Southern California ranges, not a quote.

What changes your price

  • Length and height: most of the price is footage times height.
  • Gates: each gate is priced separately, and wide RV gates cost far more than walk gates.
  • Tear-out: removing an old fence or concrete footings adds labor and disposal.
  • Permit: Ontario's fee is based on the job's valuation, with a $47.50 minimum plus plan check.
  • Ground and slope: slopes, roots and buried concrete slow post setting.

Sheet 10

Fence questions from Ontario owners

Answers based on Ontario and California rules.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Ontario, CA?

Yes, for most fences over 3 feet. The City of Ontario requires a building permit for wood, chain link and wrought iron fences and gates over 3 feet tall, and for block walls over 3 feet. The city also reviews the design and location of fences and walls even when no permit is needed.

How tall can a fence be in Ontario?

In residential districts, 3 feet in the front yard and 6 feet along side, street-side and rear property lines, measured from the lowest adjacent finished grade. Corner lots keep anything over 3 feet out of the corner clearance area at intersections.

How much does a fence cost per foot in Ontario?

Typical installed Southern California ranges are about $30 to $70 per linear foot for a 6-foot redwood or cedar privacy fence, $35 to $75 and up for vinyl, $35 to $100 for wrought iron, tubular steel or aluminum, and $18 to $38 for chain link. Gates, tear-out and permits are priced on top.

Who pays for a fence between neighbors in California?

Civil Code 841 presumes adjoining owners benefit equally from a dividing fence and share its reasonable cost. The owner who wants to build or replace it gives the neighbor 30 days' written notice describing the work, the cost and the schedule. Disputes over the line itself need a survey.

Will a 6-foot vinyl fence survive Santa Ana winds?

It can, when the posts are reinforced, spaced and set deep enough for a solid panel's wind load. Most wind failures start at the posts and footings rather than the panels, which is why post layout gets planned before the material is ordered.

What are the pool fence rules in Ontario?

Ontario requires any pool, spa or pond deeper than 1.5 feet to be fully enclosed by a decorative nonclimbable fence or wall at least 5 feet tall with decorative gates. State law separately requires two of seven drowning-prevention features when a pool is permitted.

Can you add height to my block wall?

Often, with a wrought iron, vinyl or wood topper. Whether the wall can carry it depends on its footing, reinforcement and grout, which are checked before anything is attached, and the total height still has to fit the city's limit.

Do I need a survey before building a fence?

Not always. An old fence does not prove where the property line is. When the line is in doubt or a neighbor disputes it, a licensed land surveyor sets it; Chino Hills also accepts a signed common property line agreement in some cases.
